The truck range designated the "New Generation" that was built from 1973 to 1988 by Daimler-Benz had a new design with a totally new image. The new generation, of which the 1628 S was a prominent representative, enabled Daimler-Benz to strengthen their position with medium and heavy trucks successfully throughout the world. With their 1628 S, Mercedes-Benz offered a striking, economical, four-wheeled tractor, with a very low frame height and parabolic springs, for short and long haul transport. Its high-volume, 14,620 cc, V8 diesel engine developed 280 hp; from 1980 up to 330 hp with turbocharger (1633 S). This heavy-duty articulated vehicle gave an enormous maximum permissible trailer load of 22 tonnes, was distinguished by its low fuel consumption and, due to its versatility, it came to be used for a wide variety of applications. As special equipment the truck had a sun visor and a roof spoiler, which substantially reduced aerodynamic drag and contributed to the improvement in handling and consumption.
