Background information
The Vasa, named after the Swedish royal dynasty, was commissioned in 1625 under King Gustav II Adolf as the flagship of the Baltic Sea Fleet. With a length of 69 meters and equipped with 72 cannons, she was one of the most impressive warships of her time. Over 700 gilded sculptures decorated the magnificent ship. Tragically, the Vasa sank in Stockholm harbor on her maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. After 333 years it was recovered and can now be admired in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
