Airfix Hawker Fury I 1:48

Airfix Hawker Fury I 1:48

Bearing the distinction of being the first RAF fighter to exceed 200mph in level flight, the Hawker Fury was one of the most capable fighters of the era until surpassed, first by the Gloster Gladiator and then by the monoplane Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire.

While beautiful and fast, the Fury was also much more expensive to produce compared to its contemporaries, such as the Bristol Bulldog, resulting in it seeing only limited frontline service. By the outbreak of World War II, the Fury only served with the South African Air Force as a front line fighter, the RAF examples, had all been retired to second line duties.

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E-1/E-3 /E-4 1:48

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E-1/E-3 /E-4 1:48

The E-1 carried two 7.92 mm MG 17s above the engine and two more in the wings. The E-1B became the first operational Bf 109 fighter bomber. These were fitted with either one central bomb rack, carrying one 250 kg bomb, or two under-wing bomb racks, each carrying a 50 kg bomb. The E-3 was armed with the two MG 17s above the engine and one MG FF cannon in each wing. The E-3 was replaced by the E-4 (with many airframes being upgraded to E-4 standards starting at the beginning of the Battle of Britain) which was different in some small details, most notably by using the modified 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon and having improved head armour for the pilot.

Classed as one of the best fighters of the war, the Bf109 served from 1938 to 1945 and beyond. After successful campaigns across Poland, France and the Low countries, this ‘E’ variant was the Spitfire’s main adversary across England in 1940. While hampered by its short range, the Messerschmitt acquitted itself well, as it later did over the whole Western Front.

Airfix Folland Gnat 1:48

Airfix Folland Gnat 1:48

Developed as a small, lightweight and manoeuvrable fighter, the Folland Gnat was never accepted into RAF service in that role. However, after being re-designed with two seats, it found its niche as a superb trainer and its small size and excellent aerobatic capability made it a natural choice for the RAF’s aerobatic teams. The Yellow Jacks first used the Gnat to great effect, before the Red Arrows used it as their first aircraft.

Designed by W.E.W Petter, the Gnat entered RAF service in 1962 giving trainee pilots the perfect first experience of fast jets before they moved onto the Hunters and Lightnings they would fly on front line duties. Eventually the introduction of the Hawk jet trainer meant the end for the Gnat and they were phased out of RAF service in the late 1970s. A large number were however passed to private operators where they still continue to be displayed at air shows

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E-4/E-1 1:48

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E-4/E-1 1:48

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb was the most widely produced variant of the Mk.V series of Spitfires. Entering service with the RAF in early 1941 the Mk.Vb variant incorporated a number of improvements over earlier Spitfires. Most notably it was the first common variant to be fitted with the ‘B’ wing, comprising two 20mm cannons and four .303in Browning machine guns. This gave the Mk.Vb a big increase in firepower, something lacking from the earlier all machine gun armed Spitfires.

Also introduced were fishtail exhausts, giving a slightly improved exhaust thrust and therefore performance, metal covered ailerons, a deeper oil cooler and the front windscreen was also altered to one featuring an internally armoured section. The Malcolm Hood was also improved, offering a better overall view for the pilot.

Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant Mk1 1:48

Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant Mk1 1:48

With its powered dorsal mounted turret, the Boulton Paul Defiant was one of the most interesting fighter aircraft to see service during the Second World War. Originally designed to attack massed formations of enemy bombers, the additional weight of the turret and lack of forward firing defensive armament quickly dictated that the Defiant was better suited to night fighter operations.

Arguably one of the most distinctive aircraft of WWII, the Ju87B Stuka was a highly effective dive and attack bomber, capable of delivering precision bombing attacks, in support of the Germans ‘Lightning War’ concept. Airfix English Electric Lightning F1/F1A/F2/F3 1:48

Airfix English Electric Lightning F1/F1A/F2/F3 1:48

Designed at the height of the Cold War during the 1950s, the English Electric Lightning was the only all British Mach 2 fighter to enter service with the RAF, where its performance placed it well ahead of contemporary rivals. The Lightning’s engines were positioned in a unique staggered stacked installation and their huge power gave the Lightning an exceptional rate of climb, service ceiling and top speed. The F1 version of the Lightning entered service in 1959, with the improved F1A following in 1961. Various improved versions of the Lightning were introduced through the 1960s, all of them attempting to either improve the endurance of the aircraft, an area in which the Lightning struggled, or the lack of armament options for the type. While successive variants did improve these areas, the Lightning was still hampered by them up until its eventual replacement in the late 1980s.

Airfix Gloster Meteor F8 1:48

Airfix Gloster Meteor F8 1:48

Historically, the Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to see service during the Second World War. The F.8 variant of the Meteor was perhaps the definitive incarnation of this famous aircraft and was the main RAF fighter throughout the 1950’s, until superseded by the Hawker Hunter.

As the first jet aircraft to see service with the Royal Air Force, the Gloster Meteor will always be seen as historically important. A stable and reliable aircraft, the Meteor soon became outclassed as an air superiority fighter, but the effectiveness of the basic design allowed the aircraft to be used in a variety of other roles. In combat with MiG 15 fighters over Korea, Royal Australian Air Force Meteors were found to be severely lacking as dogfighters and were to suffer at the hands of this diminutive Soviet fighter. It was quickly relegated to ground attack duties, where it proved to be extremely effective.

Airfix English Electric Canberra B2/B20 1:48

Airfix English Electric Canberra B2/B20 1:48

The incredible success of the English Electric Canberra jet bomber can be gauged by the length of time it remained in service with the Royal Air Force. With the first Canberras arriving at RAF No.101 Squadron in early 1951, the last photo-reconnaissance PR.9 machines were only withdrawn in 2006 – a remarkable 55 years in service.

When the Canberra entered RAF service in the early 1950’s, it was truly a ground-breaking aircraft in every respect. Possessing performance superior to that of many front line fighter aircraft of the day, the Canberra was capable of flying at speeds and altitudes which make it almost impervious to interception by enemy fighters. Setting a number of world speed and altitude records, the highly capable Canberra was coveted by many of the world’s air forces and became a great export success for the British Aviation industry. The definitive B.2 bomber variant was licence built in Australia, under the designation Canberra B.20.

The AgustaWestland Merlin HC3 is the RAF version of the AW101 medium-lift helicopter, which was developed as a joint venture between Westland Helicopters in the UK and Agusta in Italy. Powered by three 2,312shp RTM322-01 turboshaft engines, the Merlin HC3 can lift a payload of up to 5,433kg, including 24 troops or a variety of vehicles and equipment.

The Merlin Airframe incorporates many advanced technologies, such as BERP compsite rotor blades for increased lift and effciency, and ACSR vibration control systems to ensure a smooth ride and reduced airframe stress.

The HC3 first was operational service in the Balkans in 2003, and served in Iraq during 'Operation Telic' until July 2009.
