Airfix The Dambuster Avro Lancaster B.III (Special)

Airfix The Dambuster Avro Lancaster B.III (Special)

While the Lancaster saw the vast majority of its service as a high altitude night bomber, attacking strategic targets deep within Germany, notably its involvement in the battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, it was a daring low level raid that gave the Lancaster arguably its finest hour. The Dambusters raid, as it has since become known, was one of the most famous opertions of the war. Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the nineteen specially modified Lancaster bombers attacked the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe, and Ennepe dams, with the Mohne and Eder dams being breached.

This caused widespread drestruction to both the German war effort and food production. The dams were breached using a special type of bomb, the Upkeep mine, or 'bouncing bomb'. This was rotated before being dropped so that is skipped along the surface before impacting against the dam, sinking and exploding, thus rupturing the dam. This avoided the need for high altitude raid and avoided torpedo nets. the attack was a partial success, but greatly improved the morale of the Allies and the British public.

Operation Chastise was the official name for the attacks on the German dams, which occured on 17th May 1943 during the Second World War. The attack was carried out buy 617 Squadron RAF, specially formed for this unique and highly dangerous mission. The squadron subsequently became known as the legendary Dambusters.

Airfix RAFBF Hawk 'Design a Hawk' Scheme 1:72

Airfix RAFBF Hawk 'Design a Hawk' Scheme 1:72

After a phenomenal response to our 2013 ‘Design a Hawk' competition conducted on behalf of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, and after days of scrutiny, the winning design was selected by a panel of judges made up from the RAFBF and Airfix.

The winning design created by 14-year-old Heather Morien from Cramlington, Northumberland, was liked by the judges because of its vibrant and fun use of the RAFBF colours. The judges commented that there were so many excellent entries that selecting a winner was particularly difficult, and they’d like to thank everyone for taking part.

For her brilliantly colourful design Heather received a mounted version of her model.

Airfix Channel Dash Gift Set 1:72

Airfix Channel Dash Gift Set 1:72

The Channel Dash, codenamed operation Cerberus by the Germans, was one of the most audacious naval operations of all time. In early 1942, three of the Kriegsmarine's most powerful warships were stranded in the French port of Brest, unable to easily recover to a German port and under repaet bombing attacks by the RAF.

The three German capital ships, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen had no choice but to run the British naval blockade around the port of Brest and break for home waters through the English Channel - a stretch of water in places only 30 miles wide - under the noses of the RAF, Royal Navy and shore batteries.

On the night of teh 11th of February, the German ships slipped through the blockade and made full speed into the Channel. Unfortunately for teh British, and luckily for the Germans, the ships were not spotted until the following morning by two Spitfires of the RAF, however, due to needing to maintain radio silence, they did not inform their superiors until landing.

While the RAF and Royal Navy had been expecting this operation their response was far from effective. Just six Swordfish bi-planes made up the intial strike force. Led by Lieutenant Commander Eugene Esmonde, DSO, they circled their RAF Manston base for around five minutes, waiting for their allotted escort of RAF Spitfires, but it was just ten aircraft of number 72 Squadron that found the Swordfish and escorted them, against a force of up to 250 Luftwaffe fighters.

The attack was suicide. The Spitfires soon became embroiled in a whirling dogfight with the Luftwaffe fighters, leaving the six Swordfish to the mercy of any other fighers and the murderous flak. Esmonde pressed home his Torpedo run to the lowest level, even flying when his port wing was shot off and his aircraft aflame. All the aircraft were lost, with just five crewmen surviving. Esmonde was not one of the survivors.

All the ships escaped unharmed, the only damage to them during the whole operation was thanks to mines laid in the approach to their own harbours. Repeated attacks by bomber command and coastal command were ineffective, as were the shore batteries and destroyer assaults.

Airfix Battle of Britain - Ready for Battle Gift Set 1:48

Airfix Battle of Britain - Ready for Battle Gift Set 1:48

At the height of the summer of 1940, the fate of the free world rested upon the skill and courage of just a few young pilots as the RAF stood alone against the might of the as yet undefeated German Luftwaffe. In the air above southern England, Supermarine Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes fought vicious dogfights with the fighters and bombers of the enemy.

As they wheeled and fought across the sky it was down to a large group of men and women based on the ground to keep these vital aircraft serviceable and armed during these crucial summer months. Refueling was the duty of the then common Albion AM463 refueling truck, which with its three separate hoses was capable of refueling three fighters simultaneously thus speeding up the vital turn around between fighter sorties. The aircraft were rearmed and maintained by armies of fitters and gun crews, feeding thousands of .303 rounds into the gun bays of the waiting fighters.

Finally, trucks such as the Bedford MWD were used to transport men and equipment across airfields and around the country in this fraught and dangerous time. While the majority of the recognition goes to the pilots of the RAF, who risked everything to defeat the Luftwaffe, the contribution made by the general crews and other ground personnel must not be forgotten, many were killed and injured in the Luftwaffe attacks on airfields and they worked tirelessly to ensure the RAF emerged victorious.
Recreate the action and the history of getting ready for battle in your own diorama using the models supplied in this exciting Gift Set.

Airfix Battle of Britain - 75th Anniversary Gift Set 1:72

Airfix Battle of Britain - 75th Anniversary Gift Set 1:72

The Battle of Britain is regarded by many to be one of the most pivotal events of the Second World War. The main battle took place from July to Seplamber 1940 and was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by airpower and was the largest and most sustained aerial bombing campaign up until that time. The 'few' of the RAF stood up to and fought off the might of the Luftwaffe, pitching their outnumbered Hurricanes and Spitfires into deadly combat with Messerschmitt 109s and hordes of Luftwaffe bombers, such as the Heinkel He 111.

The Battle had three distinct phases. The first began with attacks on shipping convoys to try and draw the RAF into battle. In the second the Luftwaffe turned their attention to trying to cripple the southern airfields of the RAF by bombing and in this they nearly succeeded. Finally, in the third phase the head of the Luftwaffe Goering, under orders from Hitler, switched his focus to bombing Britain's cities thus allowing the RAF to regroup and regain its strength.

By the late autumn of 1940, the RAF had regained air superiority over Southern England, the German losses having become unacceptable and Hitler was forced to cancel his plans to invade Britain in order to concentrate on the planned invasion of Russia.

Airfix Pearl Harbor - 75th Anniversary Gift Set 1:72

Airfix Pearl Harbor - 75th Anniversary Gift Set 1:72

In one of the most infamous raids of WWII, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise strike attack on the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor on 7th December 1941. Launching from six aircraft carriers in two attack waves, over four hundred strike and fighter aircraft targeted the US Pacific Fleet moored at Pearl Harbour and the airfields at Ford Island, Hickam Field, Bellows Field and Wheeler Field. Despite inflicting significant damage, America would resolve to avenge this attack and destroy the Japanese war machine.

As the Japanese launched their surprise attack against US Forces at Pearl Harbor, most service personnel on the ground were oblivious to the perilous position they were in. As the first wave of Japanese fighters swept in, panic and confusion set in and most attempted to find whatever cover they could. Determined to fight back many servicemen manned their guns and did what they could to deter the attack. At Haleiwa airfield, Lt. Kenneth Taylor and Lt. George Welch climbed into the cockpits of their P-40 fighters and took off under a hail of enemy machine gunfire, before launching into a furious defence of their airfield.
