Tamiya German Sdkfz 'Stuka Zu Fuss' 1:35 Scale

6. Tamiya German Sdkfz 'Stuka Zu Fuss' 1:35 Scale

Ref: TAM35151

It was shortly after the invasion of Russia in 1941, that the German Wehrmacht began to seriously consider a necessity of increasing firepower in their motorized infantry formations. By applying some simple modifications to he Sd.Kfz. 251 infantry half-track, they partially fulfilled this requirement. One of these variants was designated the "Sd.Kfz. 251/1 mit Wurfrahmen" (the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 with launching frames). It was adapted for six, externally mounted frames housing short-range rockets of 28cm and 32cm size. The wooden or metal rocket containers were used as shipping crates during transport, and were attached to base plates on the sides of the vehicle for firing. Aiming direction was provided by pointing the vehicle at the target. Two rods were attached on the front of the engine hood, to help the driver align the vehicle on the target. Elevation was adjusted by changing the angle of the container mounting plate. The rockets were fired electrically from inside the vehicle. With an effective range of more than 2000 meters, the rockets provided the German infantrymen with effective fire support against close in area targets. This highly effective half-track was affectionately called the "Stuka zu Fuss", or Stuka on foot, taken from the German Ju87 series dive bombing aircraft.

Tamiya German Sdkfz 251/9 Kanonenwagon 1:35 Scale

8. Tamiya German Sdkfz 251/9 Kanonenwagon 1:35 Scale

Ref: TAM35147

The Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track stable was the centerpiece of the German Mechanized Corps, throughout the World War II. First production began in 1939, with the series classified into four types from Ausf. A to D, according to the production period. The early models used a very complicated body construction, made up of obliquely placed armor plates. This was somewhat simplified in the C and D types, to make mass production easier. The final, "D" production version appeared at the front in 1943, and it became the most widely used model among the many variants. More than 10,000 units of the D-type alone, were produced and entered service by the end of the conflict. Late in the war, the Sd.Kfz. 251 vehicles were mounted with a wide variety of equipment and armament for varied roles. Although originally developed as an armored personnel carrier, its high mobility and versatility allowed it to be used in a great number of roles. One of the variants, was the 251/9, which was equipped with the short barreled 7.5cm KwK37 L/24 cannon. This is the same cannon that was used as a main gun for the early versions of the Pz.Kpfw.IV and Sturmgeschutz III assault gun. With this fire power, the 251/9 was used mostly to provide direct fire support for the armored infantry, during the advance and static defense stages of the conflict.

Tamiya German Heavy Tiger I Late Version 1:35 Scale

9. Tamiya German Heavy Tiger I Late Version 1:35 Scale

Ref: TAM35146

At the time of its introduction in 1942, the German Tiger I was the most powerful and sophisticated tank available anywhere in the world, and is still considered a weaponry masterpiece of that era. Most of the Tiger I's were produced by Henschel, a heavy industry manufacturer in Germany. The later versions of the Tiger I went into production in January 1944, almost two and a half years after its debut. Many features like the thick armor plating, measuring up to 100mm in thickness at some areas, remaining unchanged. Roadwheel improvements consisted of replacing the rubber rimmed roadwheels with new wheels that ran on steel rims, which were insulated from the hub by two rubber rings clamped between disc-shaped pressings. Changes made to the turret were: a commander's cupola with seven vision ports, an anti-aircraft machine gun ring, and a side pivoting hatch; a loader's hatch with periscope; the smoke exhaust outlet relocated to the center of the turret; and internally mounted "S" mine dischargers. The 88mm KwK36(L/56) main gun was considered for replacement with the awesome KwK43(L/71) cannon, as used on the King Tiger, but was never accomplished. It has been said that one Tiger I tank was equal to five Sherman tanks on the battlefield and it was the most feared and respected of all German tanks during the conflict.

Tamiya Israeli Merkava MBT 1:35 Scale

12. Tamiya Israeli Merkava MBT 1:35 Scale

Ref: TAM35127

In 1948, one of the many problems facing the new Jewish state of Israel was a total absence of armoured fighting vehicles, and the restrictions applied to nations who had tanks, but were refused the ability to sell them outside of their own countries, made the situation for Israel almost hopeless in obtaining any. They managed to get some derelict Sherman tanks that were going to be scrapped and a few armoured cars, but the number obtained was insufficient for the creation of a viable force. It was these conditions that eventually led to the to the development of today's impressive Merkava line.

Following the cease fire of the 1948 war, several dozen Sherman tanks, of all types were purchased from all over the world and standardized on a production line set up in Israel, and designated the M-50 Sherman. Later, they were able to purchase the British Centurion tank which went on the same production line for rebuild to their own specifications. The country was still dependent upon other countries products for their armour needs, and often, due to situations beyond the control of Israel, they were denied shipments of requested items. The production line was receiving requests for modifications of M48 Patton tanks as well as Soviet T54 and T55's. Following the six day war General Israel Tal, felt an urgent need for a self-sufficiency in major weapons needs such as aircraft and tanks, due to the serious cutbacks in re-supply from leading nations. He became obsessed by the idea of building tanks in Israel, and although backed by some military experts, he was regarded with some suspicion and doubt by many others. Here, with feverish ardour and imagination General Tal started the venture which in nine years produced the remarkable Merkava.

The Merkava is manned by a crew of four and its main armament is the 105mm M64 L71A tank gun, with secondary armament of a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun located in a vertical armoured slit in the turret and two additional LMG's on the commanders hath and the loaders hatch, these are used for close in combat and against low-flying aircraft. The driver is located to left of the power pack and can enter the rear compartment by lowering his seat back. The fighting compartment extends the whole width of the hull and is air-conditioned for crew comfort in the desert environments it was designed to operated in. Engine is a Teledyne Continental AVDS-1790 V-12 Diesel which produces 900hp.

Operating in the Southern deserts, the Merkava crews enjoy hitherto undreamed of comforts. Cooled water from a container installed at the rear provides water for drinking through a special pope into the turret. In hot weather this is an absolutely vital necessity, making all the difference in the fighting capability of the crew. With the troop carrying capability, via the large rear door, the Merkava is truly one of the most modern and versatile armoured systems in the world and was extensively proven in the field of combat against the highly touted T-72 Soviet armour used in the recent Lebanon conflict.
