Airfix Dornier Do17z 1:72

Airfix Dornier Do17z 1:72

During the early years of the Second World War the Dornier Do17 was one of the Luftwaffe’s most important medium bombers. Developed during the early 1930s, first as a mail plane then as a reconnaissance bomber, the Dornier was nicknamed ‘the flying pencil’, due to its very thin tapering fuselage. While early versions used inline engines, the iconic and most widely used Z variant used Bramo radial engines, and featured a re-designed cockpit area, with the intention of providing more space and defensive capabilities for the crew.

Airfix Bristol Beaufighter Mk.X (Late) 1:72

Airfix Bristol Beaufighter Mk.X (Late) 1:72

riginally entering RAF service as a heavy fighter/night fighter in August 1940, the Bristol Beaufighter proved to be an extremely versatile aircraft. Perhaps best known as a Coastal Command strike aircraft, Beaufighters were capable of launching savage attacks against all manner of Axis shipping targets.

Although still a Mk. X version of the Bristol Beaufighter, the later production aircraft of this series included a number of improvements and alterations which gave the aircraft a very different appearance. The most distinctive of these was the addition of a large dorsal fin fillet, which greatly increased the directional stability of the aircraft. There was also a ‘thimble’ nose A.1 Mk.VIII radar, which gave the aircraft much enhanced target acquisition capabilities.

Airfix English Electric Lightning F6 1:72

Airfix English Electric Lightning F6 1:72

Entering RAF squadron service in 1960, the Lightning represented a quantum leap in capability and performance over the RAF’s previous interceptor jets, offering Mach 2+ performance as well as a phenomenal rate of climb. Until its retirement in the 1980s, the Lightning had few rivals for outright speed and climbing ability. However it was hampered by short range and a poor selection of armament. Its accident rate was also alarming. Replaced by the Tornado F3, the Lightning however remains the ultimate Cold War interceptor.
