Airfix Hawker Typhoon 1:72

Airfix Hawker Typhoon 1:72

Initially designed to replace the Hawker Hurricane as the complimentary high-altitude fighter to the Supermarine Spitfire, the Typhoon instead found its fame as a low altitude ground-attack aircraft, spearheading the airbourne assault through occupied Europe after D-Day. Designed around the enormous 24 cylinder Napier Sabre engine, the Typhoon has a tough gestation before maturing as a capable, low level fighter bomber, devistating German armour in Normandy and beyond.

Airfix Supermarine Spitfire MkVb 1:72

Airfix Supermarine Spitfire MkVb 1:72

The Spitfire MkV was one of the most successful 'temporary' fighters ever introduced into the Royal Air Force, having been rushed into service following experiences up against the Bf109s of the Luftwaffe. Over one hundred and forty RAF squadrons operated the type. It served on all battlefronts and was supplied to nine other countries including the Soviet Union and the United States.

In 1941 the Luftwaffe introduced the Fw190 providing a formidable foe to the RAF’s fighters. The Mk IX was a significant improvement on the Mk V. It had a top speed of 409 mph at 28,000 feet, an increase of 40 miles per hour. Its service ceiling rose from 36,200 feet to 43,000 feet.

Airfix Focke Wulf Fw190 F-8/A-8 1:72

Airfix Focke Wulf Fw190 F-8/A-8 1:72

First flying in 1939, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 proved to be an immediate threat to the RAF fighters when introduced in late 1941, being faster and more manoeuvrable than the Spitfire V then in service.

The F-8 was the ground attack version and differed primarily in the removal of the outboard cannons. Various combinations of under wing weapons were fitted, but the most common was one centreline bomb and four small bombs on the wings.
The A-8 version was the most numerous and heavily armed variant and entered service in 1944 as an attempt to stop Allied daylight raids, however, by then the new Allied fighters had begun to outclass it.
This newly tooled model features a detailed and accurate wheel well and canopy which can be posed open.

Airfix hawker Hurricane MkI 1:72

Airfix hawker Hurricane MkI 1:72

Developed as a replacement to the bi-plane fighters of the RAF, such as the Hawker Fury and Gloster Gauntlet, the Hawker Hurricane was revolutionary.

The maiden flight of the first production aircraft, powered by a Merlin II engine, took place in 12th October 1937. The first four aircraft to enter service with the RAF joined No.111 Squadron RAF at RAF Northolt the following December. By the outbreak of the Second World War, nearly 500 Hurricanes had been produced.
Although they fought valiantly, these very early Hurricanes, with their fabric wings and two-blade propellers, had fallen behind the best of the Luftwaffe's fighters.

Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.1 1:72

Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.1 1:72

The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the only ‘turret fighter’ to enter service with the RAF. The Defiant used the philosophy that a fighter aircraft, armed solely with a turret bristling with machine guns would be able to enter a bomber stream causing havoc and the turret would also enable it to defend itself from enemy fighters.
During its first few engagements during the Battle of Britain in 1940, enemy pilots were taken by surprise and the Defiant fared well but soon the Luftwaffe pilots worked out its weaknesses, especially the lack of forward firing guns and the Defiant was soon relegated to night fighting duties were it fared better.

Airfix Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat 1:72

Airfix Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat 1:72

The F4F Wildcat was the US Navy's primary carrier borne fighter aircraft at the start of the Second World War. Characterised by its stubby appearance the Wildcat had been developed from Gruman's successful range of pre-war biplanes and had entered service with the US Navy a year prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. By the time of the crucial battles from Midway and Guadalcanal the F4F-4 model had become the most numerous varient and new tactics enabled American naval and marine pilots to gain the upper hand on the previously all-conquering Mitsubishi Zero.

Airfix Grumman Martlet Mk.IV 1:72

Airfix Grumman Martlet Mk.IV 1:72

At a time when the Royal Navy were desperately in need of an effective single engine fighter, the new American F4F Wildcat was seen as the ideal solution and was immediately pressed into service. Known as the Martlet in Fleet Air Arm service, this diminutive aircraft was used operationally right through to the end of the war in Europe.

The Fleet Air Arm introduced the American produced F-4F Martlet (Wildcat) to combat in WWII a full year before the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. One of the most distinctive features of this diminutive fighter was the narrow track undercarriage, which had to be manually deployed by the pilot. With a crank handle placed on the right hand side of the cockpit, the pilot would have to switch to holding the control column in his left hand and crank the retraction handle thirty times with his right hand, in the seconds immediately following take off.

Airfix Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c - Night Fighter 1:72

The stable flight characteristics of the government designed Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c made it an ideal choice for use as a home defence night fighter aircraft. It famously claimed the destruction of the first German Airship over Britain on 3rd September 1916, earning pilot Lt. William Leefe Robinson a Victoria Cross.

Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VA 1:72

Without doubt, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the most important aircraft of WWII, with more being produced that any other British aircraft type – it was also in production throughout the war. The Mk.V version of the Spitfire was produced in greater numbers than any other mark and gave the RAF a combat advantage throughout most of 1941.

Airfix Hunting Percival Jet Provost T.3/T.3a 1:72

Airfix Hunting Percival Jet Provost T.3/T.3a 1:72

The Jet Provost was introduced in the late 1950s and quickly became the RAF’s premier jet basic trainer. The T3 model, introduced in 1959, featured an uprated engine and an improved canopy design, offering the side by side seated pilot and pupil a much improved view. The Provost was a joy to fly, forgiving and easy to learn on, with many of the 1960s and 70s RAF front line pilots learning their trade on its un-swept wings. Its reliability and strength also added to its suitability as a jet trainer and the addition of wing tip tanks on the T3 also added to its endurance.
