Guns Of History Whitworth Cannon 12 pounder 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Whitworth Cannon 12-lbr 1:16 Scale
Designed by Sir Joseph Whitworth, the cannon that bore his name became a favored weapon of the Confederacy. Unusual in appearance as well as operation, the Whitworth was a breech-loader that fired an elongated 12-pound iron shell from a finely rifled 1,100 pound barrel. Accurate and easy to maneuver, it had a range of 4.5 miles and made a shrill, whistling noise which could be distinguished from all other cannon of the period. The Whitworth saw action at Gettysburg, Charleston, Vicksburg, Fredericksburg and many other American Civil War battlefields.

LIMBER AMMUNITION WAGON FOR WHITWORTH CANNON
The limber was an indispensable piece of equipment during the American Civil War. It was a simple two-wheeled cart designed to carry an ammunition chest containing gunpowder and shot for the artillery pieces. A team of horses was hitched to the limber and a cannon was hooked on to its rear when the army was on the move.

The ammunition chest lid was large enough to seat up to three men. However, sitting above the gunpowder was dangerous, so after the first few months of the War, only the driver rode on the limber. In times of battle, the limber and horses were left behind the lines of fire.

Guns Of History 18c. Deck Carronade 32 Pounder 1:24 Scale

The carronade was a cast iron smoothbore, developed by Charles Gascoigne, manager of the Carron Ironworks in Falkirk, Scotland. Carronades were shorter and lighter than equivalent long guns. But, the advantage in weapon weight was offset by a much shorter range. Shot from a 32-pounder long gun traveled nearly a mile. Discharged from a 32-pounder carronade, the same shot traveled less than 1,000 yards.

Guns Of History Naval Smoothbore Deck Gun 1:24 Scale

The 18th century naval smoothbore deck cannon was a flat trajectory weapon with a point blank range of 300 yards. It used any of the period projectiles: solid shot, hot shot, bombs, grape and canister. Standard ammunition was occasionally supplemented by whatever scrap materials that were on hand, including bolts, chains, nails, even pieces of kettles.

Guns Of History James Cannon 6 Pounder 1841 1:16 Scale

The Model 1841 cannon was a lightweight gun used extensively during the Mexican War. Though fairly mobile at 900 pounds, its softball-sized shot was too small to do much damage. It was easily outranged, especially once rifled guns came into use.

An extensive number of these 6-pounders existed at the outbreak of the Civil War, and were pressed into service by both sides. When the advantages of rifled guns that fired elongated projectiles across greater distances became apparent, the government began to convert older smoothbores into rifled weapons.

Guns Of History Parrot Rifle 10 Pounder 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Parrot Rifle 10 Pounder 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Parrot Rifle 10lbr 1:16 Scale

Cast iron artillery was very accurate, but it was brittle and prone to fracture. Captain Robert P. Parrott, superintendent of the West Point Foundry, created a stronger piece by reinforcing the cast iron with a band of wrought iron around the breech. The iron band was welded into one piece and forced onto the breach while it was red hot. Cold water was then poured down the muzzle, allowing the band to shrink and attach uniformly.
Captain Parrott made the first of these rifles that carry his name in 1860 and patented it in 1861. The piece was extremely versatile, firing both fused and point impacting explosive rounds, along with shot (solid ball) and grape (large charge of small balls). With an effective range of over 2,000 yards, the Parrott Rifle became one of the favorite pieces of both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.

The hand-cranked machine gun was invented in 1861 by Dr. Richard J. Gatling of Hartford County, NC. Over time, 6-barrel and 10-barrel versions were produced in various calibers, including .45, .50 and 1". All were activated by cam-operated bolts that alternately wedged and fired the bullets, then ejected the spent cartridges, allowing each barrel to cool down before it came around to be fired again.

Guns Of History Civil War Battery Forge 1:16 Scale

Assigned to every field artillery battery during the Civil War, the battery forge was a portable blacksmith shop. It carried all blacksmith’s tools, extra horseshoes, nails and spare irons necessary to keep the horses properly shod and to repair the cannons, limbers, caissons and wagons. With a chassis similar to that of a caisson, the battery forge comprised a bellows house, coal box and fireplace. The bellows house was partitioned for a double-chambered bellows in the top section and storage space for iron and steel below. The box at the rear carried 250 pounds of coal. In the front was the fireplace, backed by a tall sheet-iron partition, which protected the bellows house.

Guns Of History 3'' Ordnance Rifle 1:16 Scale

The wrought iron 3" Ordnance Rifle was invented by John Griffen in 1854 as an answer to the danger of cast iron gun tubes exploding when fired. Griffen modified a procedure used in the production of wrought iron for lighthouse construction. Griffen’s method wrapped 3/4" thick strips of wrought iron around an iron core. The tube was heated to welding temperature and rolled out to about seven feet long. Then, the trunions were welded on and the bore reamed and rifled.

Guns Of History Mountain Howitzer 12 Pounder 1:16

Guns Of History Mountain Howitzer 12 Pounder 1:16
The mountain howitzer was a short-barreled, large-caliber gun. Because it looked like a shortened, downsized cannon, it became known and the “bull pup” during the Civil War. Although its 4.62” bore could handle the same 12-pounder ammunition as a regular 12-pounder gun, a mountain howitzer weighed less than the barrel alone of a larger 12-pounder field gun. It could be quickly disassembled and carried by three pack mules through forests, across swampy ground, or over rough mountain terrain.
For the next few years the double-barrel cannon was used as a signal gun for the town of Athens, to warn of approaching Union soldiers. After the war, it was mounted on a carriage and placed in the town square, where it still stands.

Guns Of History Athens Double Barrel Cannon 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Athens Double Barrel Cannon 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Double Barrel Cannon 1:16 Scale
John Gilleland of Athens, Georgia convinced the town to build a double barrel cannon that could fire two cannon balls simultaneously. He was sure that the balls, connected by a long chain, would mow down enemy lines like a scythe cutting wheat.

The double six-pounder iron cannon was cast in one piece at the Athens Steam Company in 1862. Each barrel had its own touch hole so it could be fired independently, plus a common touch hole in the center to fire both barrels at the same time.
The cannon was tested in a field on the Newton Bridge Road in April 1862. When the piece was fired, one ball left the muzzle before the other, sending the two balls on an erratic circular course, plowing up the ground all around. Then the chain snapped and the balls careened off in separate, unpredictable directions. One killed a cow and the other demolished the chimney on a log cabin. Assembled spectators scattered in fear of their lives.
For the next few years the double-barrel cannon was used as a signal gun for the town of Athens, to warn of approaching Union soldiers. After the war, it was mounted on a carriage and placed in the town square, where it still stands.

Guns Of History Civil War Coffee Wagon 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Civil War Coffee Wagon 1:16 Scale

Guns Of History Civil War Cofee Wagon 1:16 Scale
Coffee was a staple of the Union Army. Each soldier received a daily ration of 1/10 pound of green coffee beans, which they had to roast and grind themselves.

The grinding process consisted of smashing the beans between a rock and the butt of their gun. This made for an uneven grind and destroyed more than one rifle stock. Members of the Union-affiliated Christian Commission provided a better brew at large scale, long term encampments, but they could not serve the troops on the move.

In March of 1863, Jacob Dunton, a Philadelphia pill maker patented the coffee wagon, a modified artillery caisson and gun carriage that could “march” with the army. The coffee wagon carried three 35 gallon wood fired urns that brewed up 105 gallons of fresh coffee every hour. It was pulled by a standard limber, but the ammunition chest held coffee beans and grinders instead of shot and gunpowder.

Guns Of History Civil War Rucker Ambulance 1:16 Scale
The carnage of the Civil War made transporting the wounded from the battlefields a matter of life and death. The ambulance wagon designed by Brigadier General D. H. Rucker and built at the Government Repair shops at Washington proved to be the most valuable innovation. Used during the latter half of the war, it was able to carry patients in seated or prone positions.

Two litters (stretchers) on the floor of the wagon were divided by longitudinal hinged joints and could be bent at right angles to serve as bench seats. The upper platform halves, hinged to the sides of the wagon, dropped down to form the seat backs.
