Period Weaponry

Mantua's range of period Cannon kits all feature quality hardwood, complete with brass, metal and wood fittings. The wood detailing is all laser cut to ensure accuracy of assembly and the plans provided are clear and detailed. The cannon kits sit on a wooden display base, with a brass engraved nameplate. The model cannon kits make for excellent display pieces and there are currently 11 models in the range.

This Carronade was built by the French following the style of the English developed a century before. The screwed sight, the stronger breech & gun carriage running on a track, made the French carronade more efficient. The gun was placed into the first & second rate vessels like the "Toulonnaise", "La Belle Poule" and the "Valmy".

Mantua Model English Carronade 18th Century

Mantua Model 801 English caronade - XVIII century
This English carronade was built between the years 1776 & 1779 by the Carron Company, an ironworks in Falkirk, Scotland, UK, from which is taken the name. It was the first barrel cast in a pig foundry, realy squat & with short range, but terribly effective during naval battles at short distance. Two english caronades were placed on the H.M.S. Victory’s fore deck.
