Graupner Alexander von Humboldt

Graupner Alexander von Humboldt

This ship was originally planned by the Prussian Maritime Ministry as the reserve fire-fighting ship Reserve Sonderburg, and the building contract was granted in 1906. On 10 September 1906 the vessel was launched at the Bremen Weser dockyard, later to be known as AG Weser, where it bore the construction number 155.

As with many other fire-fighting ships, the basis of the design was an ocean-going sailing ship hull. However, instead of the three normal fore-and-aft sail masts, the hull was fitted with two sail masts (fore and mizzen) plus a lateen mast at the mainmast position. Fire-fighting ships of this period were rigged virtually as schooners, i.e. they shipped suitable sails for all masts. Like all fire-fighting ships the vessel was painted red and carried white name placards. After 1945 she lay at the Kiel station as a fire-fighting ship, where she remained until 1986.

After conversion into a bark-rigged sail-training ship the vessel was fitted with a long poop deck which served as crew accommodation. Other modifications included new standing and running rigging, a longer jib boom, a green colour scheme and green sails. The present name Alexander von Humboldt, often abbreviated to “Alex”, was assigned to the sailing ship in 1988.

Our model has been developed in collaboration with the operator of the ship, the Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training (German Sail-Training Foundation - www.gruene-segel.de). She became a very familiar sight when used as a promotional medium for a well-known Bremen-based brewery.

Sailing the model in wind strengths above 1 Beaufort is not recommended!
Since the model is not fitted with a variable rig, it should be operated as a powered boat with sails.
The Alexander von Humboldt has become an extremely familiar sight through its appearance in television advertisements for a world-renowned brand of beer. The hull was painted green inrecognition of the sailing ships of the Rickmers shipping company.
