Anatomy of the Ship: The 100 Gun Ship Victory

Anatomy of the Ship: The 100 Gun Ship Victory

One of the most popular titles in the best-selling Anatomy of the Ship series Comes complete with 1/192 Scale fold-out plan Forever associated with Nelson's last battle, HMS Victory is one of the most famous ships of all time, and is now preserved as a major part pf the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth. The ship's survival is particularly appropriate since Victory is not only an example of the ultimate sailing warship - the three decker First Rate - but was also the most popular and successful 100-gun ship of the period. Forty years old by the time of Trafalgar, she had been the flagship of half a dozen famous admirals, and was to continue in active service until 1812. First published in 1987, this revised edition of the 100-gun ship Victory now incorporates and details the most recent research and findings of the HMS Victory Advisory Technical Committee. This Volume Features: * Full description of the ship and her position in the development of the First Rate * Pictorial section emphasising close-up and on-board photographs * Guide to the ship's Trafalgar colour scheme on the book jacket * More than 300 perspective and 3-view drawings, with in-depth descriptive keys, of every detail of the ship as presently restored - general arrangements, hull construction, fittings, decoration, masts and yards, riggings and armament * One large-scale 1/192 plan on the reverse of extended fold-out jacket

Anatomy of the Ship: The 24-Gun Frigate Pandora

Anatomy of the Ship: The 24-Gun Frigate Pandora

The Pandora was a 24-gun Sixth Rate built at Deptford in 1779. The 20- and 24-gun classes were the smallest regularly commanded by a Post Captain and they were consequently known as post ships; they were also the smallest frigate-built ships on the Navy List. The Pandora is best known for her voyage to Tahiti which was undertaken to bring back the Bounty mutineers. Fourteen of them were captured at Tahiti but four of them were drowned when Pandora ran aground on 29 August 1791 on the Great Barrier Reef on her return journey. The surviving ten were eventually brought back to Portsmouth and court-martialled. Three of them were hung. The site of the wreck was discovered and has been extensively excavated by a team led by Ron Coleman.

Anatomy of the Ship: The 32-gun Frigate Essex

Anatomy of the Ship: The 32-gun Frigate Essex

On the successful completion of the War of Independence, the American navy was disbanded, and it was not until the late 1790s that a regular naval force was reconstituted. Provoked by the need to protect American merchant shipping from the belligerent European nations and the piratical Barbary powers, Congress decided on a programme of frigate building, which included the 32-gun frigate Essex.

Anatomy of the Ship: The Aircraft Carrier Victorious

Anatomy of the Ship: The Aircraft Carrier Victorious

The distinguished career of the carrier Victorious extended from World War II to 1967. A major refit during the 1950’s, saw her emerge as the Royal Navy’s most advanced carrier in the world.
The author’s drawings show all the changes which she underwent during her long career, while the text focuses especially on her war service which included a number of daring airstrikes, most notably against the German battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz. Later she sailed for the Far East where she was part of the British Pacific Fleet; there she withstood several kamikaze attacks.

Anatomy of the Ship: The Battleship Bismarck

Anatomy of the Ship: The Battleship Bismarck

The Bismarck is probably the most famous warship in the world. The German battleship, 45,000 tons, was completed in early 1941 and went on to sink the 'Mighty Hood', pride of the Royal Navy, during one of the most sensational naval encounters ever. After a dramatic chase around the North Atlantic, involving many units of the Royal Navy, Bismarck was finally dispatched with gunfire and torpedoes on 27 May, less than five months after she was completed. Her wreck still lies where she sank, 4800m down and 960km off the west coast of France.

Anatomy of the Ship: The Heavy Cruiser Takao

Anatomy of the Ship: The Heavy Cruiser Takao

The Takao class of Japanese heavy cruisers was approved in the 1927–31 building programme, and the Takao was the first of four vessels launched between May 1930 and April 1931. These were genuinely aggressive ships, being fast, heavily armed with both guns and torpedos, and well-protected. They saw much action in the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945, but Takao, having survived a torpedo attack during the Leyte Gulf battle preliminaries, was sunk by a British midget submarine in Singapore Harbour.

Anatomy of the Ship: The 44 Gun Frigate USS Constitution

Anatomy of the Ship: The 44 Gun Frigate USS Constitution

The Constitution was one of the US Navy's first six original frigates, ordered as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Fast and heavily built, she was nominally rated as a 44 but mounted thirty 24-pdr and twenty-two 12-pdr cannon. Her most famous encounter, after which she became nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' due to British shot being seen bouncing off her hull, involved HMS Guerriere, which she smashed; the same treatment was meted out to HMS Java four months later. She is now berthed in Boston Harbor.
